Above: The final outcome of the project, produced in Unreal with all Lighting and partial addition of my modelled modular kit. Made with a team of two, over a period of 8-weeks, and planned for an additional four to learn basic Unreal and game production principles.
Project Description
As part of my student course work, I worked on an Unreal Engine Environment Design together with Ryan Ricketts, another student in my course. Ryan took care of the Enviro Compositing/Lighting, and I handled the Terrain Map Generating & Modelling/Texturing. Our aim was to create a prototype Japanese game environment. This involved the use of Unreal Engine, Maya, Substance Painter, World Machine and ZBrush to create an environment with a realistic Japanese aesthetic.
There were some added botanical props from the asset pack called the Soul City Pack to fill out the game environment a bit more completely.
I learnt the concept of building modular game assets and while I subsequently found improved process methods, I was really happy with the results of my efforts by the time the final submission date came around.

Using my basic understanding of Japanese I constructed some alphas and used Substance Painter fonts to create authentic text detail.

I wanted to really try and make a decent rock look by layering in Substance Painter. The rocks would possibly be near the firepit so I textured them in the same session to guarantee conformity

Later on I had made this with the intention of creating wires and lanterns hanging and branching off from them. But the project was misplaced by my teammate who was doing all the level layout and asset to material assignment.

This shows the Landscape map and Pagoda I solely generated and modeled respectively. With some of the composited tree kit used by my other team member in 'Lighting Only' view.

To create a willow tree look on my fence modules, I put my lowpoly from Maya through a ZBrush sculpt. The result is the above.
